WE ARE CARDINALS! WE SOARR!
This is the first line of our Cardinal Creed, which represents our new SOARR program at Luverne Elementary.
At about this time last year, a group of staff members at LES applied for a grant to participate in a training group to bring the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) program to Luverne. PBIS is a nationally recognized program that provides a framework to implement the best evidence-based practices for improving academic and behavior outcomes for all students. This funding provides training and support over a two year implementation process. The PBIS program at Luverne Elementary is called “SOARR.” SOARR stands for Safe, Optimistic, Achieve, Responsible, and Respect.
While our leadership team is still learning about all the aspects of the PBIS program, we are quickly adapting some of its concepts to fit our school. There are three basic parts to our SOARR program: educating students about our established behavior expectations, implementing a system of acknowledging and rewarding students for positive behavior, and clearly defining a process to identify and address inappropriate behavior.
A behavior matrix has been developed to define what we expect for behavior from all students in various situations. We expect students to be Safe, Responsible, and Respectful. Staff will teach students what it means to be safe, responsible, and respectful in various locations and situations in our school. This educational piece is a key aspect to our SOARR program.
A second component to our SOARR program is to encourage students to follow rules and to behave appropriately through acknowledgement and praise. We have already begun this step with our monthly “Friday Fly-Over” assemblies where we cheer for those students with perfect attendance and acknowledge students for earning tickets for completing homework. We have had a lot of fun producing school videos to communicate important messages to our students.
Finally, we will address inappropriate behavior when it occurs. Discipline issues will be documented to allow staff to identify patterns or “trouble” areas. Once identified, these areas can be addressed through increased monitoring, reteaching expectations, and/or reinforcing the appropriate behavior.
The mission of Luverne Public Schools is that, “Staff, students and community will work together to provide quality education and co-curriculars that result in high individual achievement in all areas of life.” The SOARR program supports the district’s mission by providing a Safe environment for all students, encouraging Optimist and positive attitudes, fostering academic Achievement, teaching students to be Responsible for their actions, and promoting Respect for everyone. We SOARR with success!
